ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“Texts were invented in the second millennium BC in order to take the magic out of images…; the photograph [also,] as the first technical image, was invented in the nineteenth century in order to put texts back under a magic spell… The invention of the photograph is a
historical event as equally decisive as the invention of writing. With writing, history in the narrower sense begins as a struggle against idolatry. With photography, ‘post-history’ begins as a struggle against textolatry.”
-Vilém Flusser
The ZERO POINT collection is constructed of three intermingled layers: the remnants of traditional images (the painting), which like its first spell represents the phenomena itself; A technical image that utilizes a semiotic system that is an indirect derivative of scientific texts; and
finally, the signs and symbols that are rooted in our history and culture, and are dependant on humanity’s capacity of imagination and collective consciousness. In this collection, I attempted to explore the world of photography through inherited traditional images and symbols, those which are undeniably associated with the virtual world. By entering into the domain of infinite concepts, I tried to explore the conceptual realm. Yet, realizing that it is a formidable task to accomplish what art is.
